The choices also feel very laid out, until the third act most of what you do simply feels planned. This lends an air of frustration that can often take you out of the experience. I ended up having to stick solely with my phone which had connection issues throughout.
The controls are often ambigious and the touchpad is next to useless to use. The player has to use either their phone or their controller’s touchpad to interact with and make decisions at key points within the game. As a game Flavourworks simply doesn’t deliver. Where the beauty of Erica lies is its acting, as an arthouse style film it’s great. You can look into the other patients and investigate a lot of intriguing stuff. So you must unravel this mystery filled with plenty of death and intrigue. Erica sees visions of cultish members, mental patients gone awry, and she simply doesn’t know what is real and fake. Your father was involved in some shady dealings at a place called Delphi House, which is a mental asylum. Your father has been murdered under extremely suspicious circumstances and you’re helping the police solve the crime (as you do when loved ones are brutally murdered). The basic premise of the story is that you play Erica, shocker I know. It ends up feeling like a 2-3 hour long movie in which you can choose where the adventure heads. With competition like Her Story and Contradiction it simply doesn’t have the same level of interactivity of most FMV games.
I say this for a reason, it doesn’t feel like a full fledged FMV experience. Erica is Playstation’s Playlink answer to Netflix’s Bandersnatch.
